Chicken Ain't Chicken
1. I Want to be a Real Cowboy Girl -- by P. Forester
An ode to all those girls rebelling from the sidesaddle and saving up for their own set of spurs. This number comes from the Girls of the Golden West via the fabulous ladies of the Any Old Time String Band.
2. They Say Virginia is for Lovers -- by K. Andreassen & M. Lucey / Yellowcar Music, ASCAP & Ol' Indidog Publishing, ASCAP
This is the most beautiful song ever written about Virginia's state motto. It's far more romantic than their first draft, Sic Semper Tyrannis.
3. My Uncle Used to Love Me but She Died -- by R. Miller
We challenge you to glean meaning from this Roger Miller gem.
4. It Don't Show on Me -- by B. Owens
Emily first noticed this song during an afternoon housecleaning session with her iPod on shuffle. She proceeded to write it on every Sweetback Sisters setlist so she could hear Zara sing it over and over again.
5. Cannonball -- by A.P. Carter
A good ol' Carter Family song that touches on three sacred themes of country music: trains, heartbreak and clothing theft.
6. Don't Cry to Me -- by J. Martin & P. Williams
Jesse learned this one from a recording of bluegrass king Jimmy Martin. He taught it to the girls during a cozy Thanksgiving retreat on the Cheat River.
7. Feeling Bad -- by H. Huggins & B. Wills
This tune entered Zaras head as a Western Swing number and exited as a lazy Hawaiian lullaby turned Telecaster-fiddle drag race.
8. Deputy Blues #2 -- by J. Ritter
What do you call a drummer who breaks up with his girlfriend? Homeless. Ba-dum ching! Stefan?
9. Red Shoes Blues -- by K. Andreassen /Yellowcar Music, ASCAP
A beautiful portrait of longing and rebellion in plastic shoes by our good friend Kristin.
10. You Done Me Wrong -- by G. Jones & R. Price
The combination of Boggle, Zara's famous roast chicken, and a rousing rendition of this song in two-part harmony led to the birth of The Sweetback Sisters on one magical spring evening in Brooklyn.
11. Have You Seen My Chicken? -- by E. Montgomery & J. Emerson
'Nuff said.
12. The Sweetest Gift, a Mother's Smile-- by J.B. Coats
Hi, Mom!
13. You're Gone (Again) -- by J. Milnes & D. Van Gundy
A tale of intoxicated romance.
